‘Camilla Diedrich was born to an oil-painter mother and a photographer father. So pursuing art-school training, ultimately earning a master’s degree from UniversityCollege of Arts, Crafts and Design, seems genetically predetermined.’ by David Sokol editor upcoming book 2010 ‘Nordic Designers’ publisher Arvinius. I grew up in studios with Bob Dylan’s music and the smell of oil paint always in the background. I decided not to become an artist because I found that studio work lonely, so I went to theaterschool and ended up playing leading roles in comedys like Moliere (male parts so I am only bragging, Camillas remarke).
‘Swedish designer Camilla Diedrich may look like an anarchist, but she thinks like an architect’ by Bradley Quinn editor of ‘Textile Designers at the Cutting Edge’, Laurence King Publishing.
Awarded Working Grant by The Arts Grants Committee, Excellent Swedish Design, Light Idea of the Year by the magazine Sköna Hem and a Special Mention Award at The XXI Compasso d’Oro 2008, Italy. Compasso d’Oro is the most authoritative award in the section in Europe, established 1954.
Way back most of my relatives were blue-collar workers, like the boxer Harry Persson, the one to the right, cool picture.

I frequentley get questions from journalists, these are the latest answers 2009:
The True Blue series is inspired by British Gentlemen’s pinstriped suites, the Westwood corner mixes baroque ornaments and graffiti zest. Your projects are so much more than just wallcoverings, actually they have more to do with art. What do you find specially inspiring?
I think I just work and reflect on my surroundings, I am very intense and curious and find inspiration in everything from daily life like news, music, movies, a seagrass or a small piece of folded paper and all these things lie somewhere, just waiting until one day an idea just pops up in the right corner of your head like the balls in a flipper game flips around and the score rises and everything falls into place.
Can you lift the curtain on your new projects? What do you actually work through?
Right now, I am thinking a lot about ‘change’, a word we have heard a lot recently. I would like to make something that makes a change and I have started investigating if it is possible, time will tell.
What are the current trends for wallpaper and other wallcoverings?
What has the biggest influence on wallpaper trends? (i.e. Is there a move towards particular colours or textures)
I can only speak for myself and explain my approach in the subject:
I am always interested in things that have been in the same way for quite a long time, things that you are so familiar with that you do not actually see them, then you look again and suddenly you discover something. It is like looking at your husband from another angle, you discover a new side that you like and wonder why you haven’t seen it before.
Wallpaper hasn’t always been as popular as it is becoming now. Why do you think it fell out of favour and what factors do you think are behind its recent surge in popularity?
I think it is because a new generation is on the scene, approaching things from another point a view, wanting to use it in another way, less conservative.
Where do you take your inspiration from for your designs?
Inspiration is everything everywhere that is going on around you in your everyday life, combined with hard work using your eyes and brain. And as your intellect often makes you run in old tracks: disconnect and just let the wheels lead you…
What effect have technological advances had on the possibilities open to wallcoverings?
Technological advances have been here for a long time, the challenging part is to work crossover, everyone is so specialized. And old habits in production die hard…find the right partner and impossible things becomes possible.
What new materials are being used for today’s most innovative wallcoverings?
It is a huge area, anything goes.
It is how you use the material that makes it innovative.
